The rising frequency of anti-Semitic attacks in France has compelled the American Jewish Congress to step forward and call for the French Government to recognize the severity of the problem and take the necessary steps to bring it to an end. Not since the pre-Holocaust era has such rampant anti-Semitic violence occurred in any modern society. Yet the French government repeatedly fails to acknowledge the problem. We are not calling for a boycott right now. Our goal is to inform the public of the anti-Semitic attacks in France, and the inadequate response from the French Government. We urge people to write letters to consulates and ambassadors. We encourage people to discuss the situation openly. Should the attacks continue to spiral out of control without proper response from the French government, we will reevaluate our recommendation. This campaign began with an advertisement urging people to consider their travel to the Cannes Film Festival. We are not telling people to stay away from Cannes. But with France about to be a media focus, and with many people traveling to France all at once, this was an appropriate time to publicize this critical situation. However, once learning of these facts, many people have reconsidered their travel plans. And the beneficiary of rectifying this shameful situation is not just the Jews of France; the conscience of the entire French nation should be prevented from again feeling the collective shame it did as a result of its actions in World War II. We do not forecast another Holocaust. France today is by no means anything like Vichy France. Yet there are objective similarities between the current situation and sixty years ago cannot be ignored. European Jewry did not foresee their impending fate back then. And American Jewry was impotent in coming to their aid. This time, the current generation of American Jewish leaders will stand up loud and strong for the Jews of France. |
