SUMMARY OF THE CURRENT SITUATION

A tidal wave of anti-semitism has hit France over the last several years. The frequency and severity of these attacks are on the increase. This is not just vandalism, but it is also physical violence.

In the entire year of 2001, the ADL listed approximately 320 anti-semitic incidents in France. In the first three months of 2002, there were over 400 incidents, according to a leading French human rights group. Yet in only the first 3 weeks of April2002, there were over 360 incidents according to the European Jewish Congress.

This website is currently compiling a comprehensive listing of attacks, but here are a but a few recent incidents:
  • 2001, the synagogue in Trappes was burned to the ground
  • December 2001 a screening of the Harry Potter movie in Paris for 800 Jewish children was cancelled for security reasons.
  • Jan 31, 2002 Jewish students in the Paris suburb of Montreuil were attacked ad sprayed with mace by 40 youths. The French police called it an act of youth gangs.
  • Jan 31, 2002 a Jewish school in a Paris suburb was burned down
  • March 30, 2002, vandals crashed two cars through the gates of a synagogue in Duchere
  • April 2 Molotov cocktails were thrown at a synagogue in Marseilles
  • April 2 a Jewish cemetery in Strasbourg was vandalized
  • April 3 a synagogue in Montpieller was firebombed
  • April 10 a Jewish soccer team outside of paris was attacked
  • April 10 a Jewish school bus was pelted with stones and several children were injured
  • April 28 a Jewish school in a Paris suburb was set on fire.

There is continuous harassment and intimdation of Jews walking down the Champs Elysee, as welll as in the 19th and 20th arrondisments were many Jews live.

Recent visitors to Paris have commented on the widespread anti-jewish slogans spray-painted around the city.

The situation has grown so grave that the Simon Wiesenthal Center issued a first ever travel advisory for jews traveling to France. More Info
